Spring turkey hunting available close to The Hideout

March 19, 2022

While The Hideout Golf Club & Resort is widely known for offering Central Texas' best lake recreation and 18-hole championship course, visitors can also enjoy nearby spring turkey hunting. While the season for much of the state's game concludes earlier in the year, spring turkey hunting continues for approximately six weeks in Brown County, Texas.

A SPRING TURKEY HUNTING PARADISE

Texas is one of the nation's top destinations for turkey hunting. The state is home to over half a million birds, so hunting opportunities are abundant, and the likelihood of bagging a bird is high. There are three species present in the state, while the prized Rio Grande is the primary focus of spring turkey hunting in Brown County, Texas that is home to The Hideout.

Named for the state's famed river, Rio Grande turkeys are highly adaptable to a variety of climates, but especially thrive in Brown County, Texas where The Hideout is located. During spring hunting season, the prized birds roost in the tallest trees available, including oak, mesquite, pine and brush.

Characteristics that define Rio Grande turkeys include tan-colored tips on tail feathers and similar amount of white and black barring on their wings. Weight averages approximately 20 pounds for adult males, while females can range from 8 to 12 pounds.

They are a vocal turkey subspecies, so hunters often enjoy employing calls during their hunts.

There are a dozen different destinations for spring hunting close to The Hideout, from small properties to ranches of more than 6,000 acres. There are semi-guided hunts for those who enjoy the thrill of calling turkeys for themselves, and fully-guided hunts with some to help choose hunting locations, call, provide decoys, and possibly employ hunting blinds.

WHEN IS TURKEY SEASON IN THE HEART OF TEXAS?

The spring turkey season in Texas runs from various dates annually between April and May. There's an additional turkey hunting season for Brown, Texas for youth only for a few select dates in May. The annual bag limit is four with no more than one being an Eastern Turkey.
